Aspiring for greatness
A teacher is not only a facilitator of learning but also a parent, friend, confidant and motivator. Growing up it was never in my intention to become a teacher. Though it is a rewarding profession, I never thought I would find joy being in a classroom for hours. Little did I know that I wouldn't be the one to choose the profession, instead it chose me. It has always been said that teaching is a calling and that one has to be born with such a marvelous gift. With both my parents as teachers, my fate was already decided by others that teaching would be my life profession.
I have always been fascinated with food, whether cooking or eating it, and I made a lifelong promise that I would work in this field. So when I got the opportunity to attend Teacher’s College, it allowed me to realize the passion I have for sharing what I know with others. Of course my area of specialization has to reflect who I am as an individual and with that in consideration I selected Human Ecology without any sign of hesitation. The term “Home Economics” usually brings to mind sewing and cake baking. However, home economics teaches much more and can lead to positions in hospitals, restaurants, hotels and even government institutions. It utilizes many technological tools as with any other subject area. Leaving teacher’s college I would already have the electric background and skills to integrate total learning experiences in the high school’s overall program development and evaluation to give students a foundation for productive learning. I believe that it is not my duty to mold the live of my future students but to guide them, as they are responsible for their own destiny. The short time I have spent at teacher’s college has changed me as a person and I am looking forward to having a relationship with my students beyond expected measures. I am willing to go the extra mile to ensure that my students fully understand what is being taught, and are able to use that knowledge to the best of their ability. I will encourage them with every passing day that what they do is worthwhile to society regardless of what others may say.
Failure is not an option and with God on my side, I will strive to be one of the best Home Economics teachers, not just in the Caribbean region but the world. There shall and will be no limits to my career as a teacher as I intend to grow and learn alongside my future students, regardless of any obstacles that may be present. Although there may be challenges along the way I am anxious to begin contributing to someone else’s future and reaping the rewards of my success. I vow to use technology to enhance my lessons and to allow learners to discover content at their own pace. It is my aim to be an effective 21st century educator by using the necessary tools like web 2.0, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, Podcast, WebQuests just to name. With this in mind I am positive that I can be an effective classroom manager.
